WNYC The Takeaway and NPR Trump Inc Investigation
Company of Trump’s Inaugural Chair Sought to Profit From Connection From Administration, Foreigners.
At his State of the Union speech, President Trump lashed out against what he called, “ridiculous, partisan investigations,” surrounding his administration. But while Robert Mueller has received much attention for his examination of ties between the Trump campaign and Russia, the office of the special counsel is one of many institutions training their eyes on potential wrongdoing.
The US Attorney’s office of the Southern District of New York has traditionally stood as a formidable check on some of the most complex crimes facing the country. When they sentenced Michael Cohen, Trump’s long-time fixer, to prison in December, the sentencing memo implicated the President in multiple felonies.
And then again in December, it was learned that the SDNY is pursuing a criminal investigation into Trump’s inaugural committee. The office issued broad subpoenas this week, looking into potential money laundering and illegal donations by foreign entities.
