our startup sample small package of 3kg, worth only a tiny fraction of $95, attracted a custom duty in an odd way. The package was with-held for “inspection+custom duty”. FedEx uses an agency called IAS Ghana to collect money by withholding small packages for delivery. They deliberately with-held the package for weeks then indicated in their TRACKING system that the package was ‘delivered’. Which was not. We had to go to the headquarters ourselves because they wouldn’t deliver, waiting to take money from us, in a form of a levy, when the packages, in particular, shouldn’t attract any such duty. The ploy is intended to catch a startup in between a rock and a hard place. It’s either you lose your package, by fraud to be stolen, or pay up unjust fees to be picked up by yourself. I wouldn’t use FedEx Ghana for now, till we get to the bottom of the policies.
